Deconstruction of double page spread

Feature.
Deconstruction.
Font
The font on the page is an average style font (default font) with a twist, making it look more curved than other types. The mast-head is not present on the page, however there is a heading which introduces the artist Birdman, in a bold block font, which clearly stands out above the other fonts as important (as a heading).
Text
There is a lot of text on the page, this is good as it means it is a full of information in the readers eyes. The way the text has been laid out, makes it look like the template for a newspaper article. Having a short summery, before moving into the main story, to further this, the article has been laid out in three columns.
Colour
The entire double page is black, with white writing, to make it contrast and stand out. The main image takes up left page as a whole, but blends in with the background.
Body language/staging
The body language of the model is very confident, but staying very informal, looking directly at the camera to keep eye contact at all times. This is good as it shows a position of power, by the model (Birdman) sitting, looking at what he has achieved.
Framing
The framing of the shot is a mid shot showing his upper body and lower body up to the knee, this is good because you can get a close up of his face, with great detail.
Lighting
The lighting of the main image, is looking from the left side of the left page, meaning that it cuts off the right side of the image from any light, as the model is sitting at an angle, half of the model is blending in with the background. This helps to add to the feel of looking back at the dark things that had to be done during his rise to power (explained in article).
Composition (overall design/layout)
The overall composition of the page creates a very dark theme, by having the model isolated from the rest of the information on the pages. The idea, of having a newspaper style article works really well with the design and style of text that is used.

  1. You understand the functions of the conventions of double page spreads very well - you also appear to have a good understanding of both connotations and denotations. However you need to ensure that all of these deconstructions relate back to your own product. You need to say when studying these products - what you like that you may use in your own magazine and what you dislike that you have decided against using.
