Deconstruction.
|
Font
|
The font is in different forms
this time, varying from more complex styles of ‘handwriting’ to bold block
font (mast head), to finally a generic style font for the rest of the text on
the page (sell-lines), in other areas there is italics, to make the
quotations stand out.
|
Text
|
There is the expected amount of
text on the page, appearing as sell-lines, mast-head and quotes. The
sell-lines are very short only giving, hints about the subject or just
stating an artist name, this is effective but not so much for people who are
new to the Genre of music (and side stories that appear with the Genre),
meaning they may not be able to follow the story clearly. The text has been
worded in a formal/informal way, making it very clear to people who are part
of the Genre.
|
Colour
|
The colour is very dark
throughout making the text, which is white, stand out from the background and
image. The mast head is also dark, but keeps a strong contrast, from the
background, making it very visible.
|
Body language/staging
|
The image has been staged to
make the overall effect look rough, by keeping the background of a cross
hatching wired fence. The body language of the artist is confident, looking
directly at the camera. The artist is wearing all black clothing on a dark
background, making him look as though he is blending in with the background
colours.
|
Framing
|
The shot, is a mid shot of the
artist, looking directly at the camera, so that at all angles you look at the
image, you cannot break eye contact. The mid shot also adds further detail
into the artist face, as it looks directly, into the shadow covered
face.
|
Lighting
|
The lighting on the image comes
from the right hand side, covering the left half of the screen in a shadow,
which is unusual to have across the front cover screen, which adds further
effect on to the main image, creating suspicion and thoughts on the artist.
|
Composition (overall design/layout)
|
The composition of the page is
average, this is because it is has a main image in the centre of the page,
making the image stand out over most other areas. The strange part of the
main image is that it has kept the original background, of the wired fence,
to add more depth to the bigger picture. Then to add further effect to the
composition, the text has been placed around the main image, so the focus
stays on the main image.

Deconstruction of a magazine frontcover

You understand the functions of the conventions of front covers very well - you also appear to have a good understanding of both connotations and denotationbs. However you need to ensure that all of these deconstructions relate back to your own product. You need to say when studying these products - what you like that you may use in your own magazine and what you dislike that you have decided against using.
