Deconstruction of contents page

Feature.
Deconstruction.
Font
The font varies from average, bold easy to read style, of text, then moves to more complex, styles of font, which is used for the page heading (saying ‘in the mix’) to open the contents page. Under the bolder text there is smaller text giving more information on the point in bold above.
Text
The text is in the form of short sentences, giving a reasonable amount of text on the article, stating only key information in a form of a ‘quote’. Then in some areas of the text the article is worded, so that it will talk in a first person perspective, to directly involve the reader. However the contents page is only specifically catering, for the target audience, by its language used it will be hard to understand, without being presently ‘in the loop’ or up to date with current Rap/Hip-Hop news. The magazine also gives its issue code/number at the top left section of the page (‘HHC230’) which provides the reader easy access to find the specific issue and contents page online.
Colour
The page has a clean white background, to bring out the main image of the Rap artist (50cent). The colour scheme stays the same throughout the page, white with black text and occasional red highlights of colour, to match with the colours on the artist back pocket (red), which gives a professional and slick feel to the page, while also staying directly to the colour scheme.
Body language/staging
The body language, of the rap artist (50cent) who is positioned off centre to the left of the page, looking over his shoulder, but primarily, with his body facing the text on the page. The body language shown from the artist is a very cool and confident pose, looking directly towards the reader.
Framing
The overall framing of the shot is a long mid shot, showing his body from the upper part of his knee. This is important as the back pocket holds an insignia/logo of his ‘Rap label’ which is important to show what Label, he is affiliated with.
Lighting
The lighting on the shot seems to create a bright effect over the white background, which the contrasts with the dark clothing of the artist, to make him then stand out even more, creating a focus point for the attention on the page. The lighting in the main image is used to create a surrounding effect where no shadows are created, this is good because it further adds to the contrasting effect from the artist, to the background.
Composition (overall design/layout)
The composition of the page as a whole is good, as it creates a focus point on the image, which in turn faces the text, making you naturally look over and read fractions of text, then the way to text is worded, the reader then becomes interested with certain areas of the text. The composition has been placed in such a way, that a flow has been created, to make it more attractive to the eye.

  1. You understand the functions of the conventions of contents pages very well - you also appear to have a good understanding of both connotations and denotationbs. However you need to ensure that all of these deconstructions relate back to your own product. You need to say when studying these products - what you like that you may use in your own magazine and what you dislikethat you would know not to use.
